Rosa Fernandes was born in Tomar (Portugal) in 1970. She completed her BSc in Biochemistry in 1993 at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, followed by a Masters in Vision Sciences (1997) and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2005) at FMUC. During her PhD, she spent a period of 10 months at the University of Michigan, U.S.A. Since 2008 she is an Assistant Researcher (FCT Ciência 2007) at IBILI- FMUC, Coimbra, Portugal.

Her main research interests include basic and clinical pharmacology, centering her attention on the study of therapeutic approaches to ameliorate endothelial function and vessel repair in diabetic chronic complications, namely diabetic retinopathy and acute coronary syndrome. Since 2008, R. Fernandes started to regularly collaborate and organize advanced courses of post-graduation and taught Pharmacology I of the Integrated Master degree of Medicine of FMUC. She has (co-)authored 1 book chapter and 19 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals. From 2008 on, R. Fernandes established her own group comprising 7 post-graduates, including 4 PhD and 3 Master students, under her supervision.

In 2011 R. Fernandes was awarded with an European grant from the EFSD/GSK as a Principal Investigator and 2 national projects – one from FMUC and another from ACIMAGO.
