Nídia Dana Lourenço was an Erasmus student at TUDelft, graduated in Chemical Engineering (5 years, Biotechnology branch) by Instituto Superior Técnico/Technical University of Lisbon (IST/UTL) and became a PhD in Biotechnology in 2003, also by IST/UTL. She is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (IBB) – IST/UTL, working in the field of Environmental Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Her research activities are focused on industrial wastewater biotreatment in sequencing batch reactors and on real-time bioreactor monitoring using spectroscopy and chemometrics. Nídia was awarded 4 FCT grants (1 doctoral, 3 post-doctoral), was recommended for a “Ciência 2008” researcher position, but not hired, and in 2011/2012 she was an Invited Assistant Professor in Wastewater Treatment at the University of Algarve (UAlg). She integrated 8 research projects as team member and in 2012 she was awarded funding by FCT as principal investigator for a project that aims to assess the applicability of the novel aerobic granular sludge technology for dye-laden textile wastewater treatment. She supervised more than 30 fellowships and studentships, including 1 PhD and 9 MSc. She is a frequent reviewer for several international journals and her publication record includes 5 book chapters, 15 peer-reviewed papers (10 as 1st author) and over 790 citations. In 2012 she won the Young Scientist Paper Award (first place) of the American Academy of Sciences, 6th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology, Houston, Texas, USA.
